February books

Well, a very poor showing on the book front this month. It is very obvious that I am not doing nearly so much commuting these days…

The Guernsey Literary and Potato Peel Pie Society by Mary Ann Schaffer and Annie Barrows. This was a re-read of this book and I love the story although I don’t think it is the greatest writing ever. This book is exciting though as obviously it is set in Guernsey and the film is due to be made this year starring Kate Winslet as Juliet. There has been a lot about it in the local papers as there were suggestion that it wouldn’t been filmed on the island. As expected there were a lot of complaints about this, and at least part of it will be filmed over here. I look forward to see what they so with the story, but expect the island to be flooded with American tourists!

The Distant Hours by Kate Morton. Not a bad book but not a patch on her first novel The Forgotten Garden!

2012 Project365 (Day 60)

An Accidental DrinkToday I went into work a little bit early and escaped a little bit early this afternoon. It was such a gorgeous day and The Mister and I went out for a walk along Cobo Beach. You definitely wouldn’t have thought it was February and whilst it wasn’t warm it certainly was mild weather and the sea was like a mill pond.

On the way home we accidentally stopped at our local pub, The Rockmount where we accidentally had a gin and tonic and a pint.

We sat and watched the sun set and just spent a few minutes together, enjoying the lovely weather and the lovely island. Not a bad way to end the day!

2012 Project365 (Day 59)

It's my house! The Mister and I bought Eden this Wendy House for her birthday yesterday. I have to admit that it was a massive bargain and was in a blue cross sale reduced from £80 to £20. It does have one set of shutter missing but I figured that it wouldn’t make too much of a difference. I do love a bargain!

I tried desperately to get a decent photo of both of the children but Eden was getting tired and hungry and was therefore grouchy. So, this photo made me laugh instead. It looks as though she is having a hissy fit because Barnabas is playing with her toy. I have to admit that Eden does do a tantrum well! It reminds me of a brilliant photo of me and my sister taken when I was about 5 and she was three. I am sitting on the swing smirking and she is standing looking really, really grumpy.

2012 Project365 (Day 58)

27 Feb 2012Auntie Jen and Auntie Josie bought Mum some beautiful roses as a thankyou for helping with their birthday party.

I ran out of time and forgot that I had to take a photo today so I thought one of these would do nicely. They are such a beautiful colour with lovely pink edges.

I didn’t really notice how tatty the edges of the flower were until I looked at the photo on the bigger screen of my computer. I guess maybe we all look ok until we are in close up and then the slightly tatty edges are a bit more visible!

2012 Project365 (Day 57)

EdenTomorrow is our niece Eden’s first birthday. She had a little birthday party this afternoon so The Mister and I popped up to see her, although we didn’t take her birthday present which is a fabulous Wendy House. Mum has decreed that it will live at their house so we decided to leave it there!

I love this photo my Eden and my sister. I had so many gorgeous photos to choose from that it was hard to narrow it down!

So, Happy Birthday for tomorrow Eden. You are truly entertaining and The Mister and I love you very much!

2012 Project365 (Day 56)

Typical!I think that my Auntie Jenny and Auntie Josie are a bit like the Queen – this year they have had two birthday celebrations. Tonight we went out with as many of the family who could come and we had a lovely meal. We had a private room and it was absolutely loved to spend some time with my family, including some of my cousins that I don’t get to see very often. The only shame was that The Mister couldn’t come with us. I think this photo of my aunts pretty much sums it up!

Here is a bonus shot of me, my Mum and my sister. It’s very unusual that we have a good photo of all of us!

2012 Project365 (Day 55)

DelilahToday has been really sad. My beloved cat Delilah got hit by a car and we had to make the decision to have her put to sleep. She had a head trauma and also spinal injuries. Her injuries meant that she wouldn’t recover and it wasn’t fair to try treatment. I cried like a baby. This little cat has been the most amazing solace and comfort to me over the years. When I have been my most upset she has comforted me, slept around my head and purred her way deep into my affections.

I uhhmed and ahhed about whether I should post this first picture, but decided that if this is to be a true reflection of my year in pictures then it should include the sad stuff. This picture was actually taken just after her heart had stopped beating. She looked so peaceful and like she was asleep. I pondered taking a last photo before the injection was administered, but she was in pain and I just wanted her to sleep. I never realised just how much cats purr when they are in pain. She is now buried under the vegetable patch.

I have included a couple of other photos though as this is how I will always remember her. Tucked up around my head and purring. I will miss her greatly, especially when I am doing my sewing. Her little nose was always poking in to chase the thread.

Delilah was so much more than just a pet. I am just grateful that I had her all that time and I am missing her already.

2012 Project365 (Day 54)

Bel CantoWell tonight was Bel Canto’s performance at the Guernsey Eisteddfod. I haven’t done an Eisteddfod for about 20 years and I still feel the fear!

This picture is Rocky and Anna doing last-minute preparations… check out their game faces! I was hoping that I could get The Mister to take a photograph of us on stage but photography was forbidden!

We were entered in the folk class and had to do two folk songs. The first one was called ‘She Moved Through the Fair’ and the second one was a French Canadian song called O Yo Yo and it was, quite frankly, terrifying. We not only had to sing in French but we also had to clap complex rhythms. There are lots of YouTube clips but this one is the best I have found. The choir in the video look so calm and collected, rather unlike us.

Anyway, we won the class with 89 points. The other two choirs had 82 and 86 and Mum and The Mister came to watch and said that we were very good and thought we should have more points than that (not that they are biased of course!). Our conductor wanted us to get at least 90 so I am quite sure that our performance will be taken apart on Monday at rehearsal! The adjudicator described it as being a little bit like ‘Riverdance for hands’!!

2012 Project365 (Day 53)

Auntie Jen & Auntie JosieCakes, cakes, cakes!Well, today you get a bonus of two photographs!

Today it is my Auntie Jen and Auntie Josie’s birthday. Obviously they are twins and they reached the grand age of 70 (shhhhhhhh, don’t tell anyone!) So they had an afternoon tea and cake party and lots of people dropped in.

My Mum had made them a fruit cake which had a picture of the twins when they were little on the top. It was a delicious cake but weighed an absolute tonne! In this picture it looks slightly as though Auntie Josie has a curvature of the spine. She hasn’t, but she was holding the majority of the weight of the cake!

I have to admit that the diet seriously went out of the window. This second photograph should show how many different cakes there were. I kind of cruised my way down the table trying a little bit of this, and a little bit of that. Oh dear. Diet disaster, but it was delicious!

2012 Project365 (Day 52)

The Pancake ChefYesterday The Mister asked me if I was going to make him pancakes today. I said no, as I don’t like them.

Fortunately my Mum loves both my Dad and her son-in-law very much so she made a nice big fat pile of them. So, whilst I was at Zumba they ate this little lot.

Cue one happy Mister! 🙂
