Notes from a Small Island 2

WARNING: be prepared for a long blog entry!!!

SBW and I have had a lovely day today. I took my Mum to school at some ungodly time this morning so we could use her car and as a result we were able to go out and about and visit some tourist sites.

So, first things first, in order to get to our destination we had to drive around the coast and over the last couple of days we have had some of the biggest tides on record for several years. Yesterday was a good tide to collect ormers as it was a very low tide, so of course it also meant that there was an impressively high tide. It has been a long time since the sea has come right over the sea walls and it was absolutely gorgeous today… clear blue sky and fantastic views!!!

So, after a little photo session we made our way up to the Occupation Museum. For those of you who don’t know, from 1940-1945 Guernsey along with the other Channel Islands was the only British territory which was occupied by the German army. There are plenty of reminders around the islands of this history in the shape of bunkers and gun emplacements and of course there are still people around who lived through the occupation. The museum itself is a slightly tatty, but fascinating place and there are various bits and pieces which have belonged to my family at one time or other in the museum on display. I was particularly looking for a photo of my Auntie Doris and Auntie Rita who ran a soup kitchen at Cobo. I couldn’t find it so I asked the owner about it and he said they had no photo but he knew of the story and showed me a book with a picture of Auntie Doris in it. I think I will blog more about that later… in the meantime here is a picture of Steve getting into the spirit of the place…

Then we went to visit The Little Chapel which is dead cheesy but I love it!

After this busy morning we had the best fish and chips in the world and then went for a walk on the cliffs.

To end the day we paid a visit to my grandparents as it is my grandma’s birthday today.

A lovely day, with beautiful weather and lovely scenery. Oh, and the company was OK too 😉
