LIBERATION DAY

9.1We had a wonderful day spent with friends. We started off with our yearly swim on Liberation Day in honour of Pearl who was arrested by the Germans for swimming whilst the island was occupied. It was a beautiful day for a swim.

We then headed to Emma’s where we met up and walked down the road and set up for a lovely picnic and watched the cavalcade. We headed back to theirs afterwards for a shared meal with friends and the kids played in the garden.

There have a been a lot of complaints from people across the island that there were not big events in town this year. I have to admit that I really enjoyed the more low-key chilled out parish events. Whilst I undersand that some people like the big crowds, funfairs etc, we had a lovely day remembering and being grateful for our friends and families and those who fought and won our freedom.

9.1

Liberation Day 2021 is another unusual affair. This year there are no major big events in town and each parish was encouraged to hold their own events.

There was also an island-wide cavalcade and we waited at Vazon with friends to watch the army and vintage vehicles pass and then we headed off to a friend’s house for a party.

Freedom is not something we take for granted these days. In a year in which we have been restricted in how much we can meet with family and friends, we are so grateful to be able celebrate together.

Lockdown Day 46

Liberation Day

Today, is probably my favourite day of the whole year, and this year’s Liberation Day celebrations were set to be epic as it is the 75th anniversary of the liberation of the island.

I have always loved seeing the cavalcade in town, listening to the music of the 1940’s, seeing the military parades and enjoying the vibe of the crowds in town. This year, the Corona Virus has scuppered absolutely all those plans. Instead of getting to celebrate and commemorate with the crowds, this year was more insular and reflective.

This morning we took a quick drive into town to see one of the Royal Navy ship HMS Tyne sail past the harbour and that was it, no more planned events. It was lovely to go out for an hour, but it just made me feel a little sad. I missed the planned celebrations.

However, we did have a really good day. We went to the neighbours house for a barbecue. The kids played together and had a wonderful feral time together and we had a few drinks.

My Dad pointed out to me that the Corona Virus has done what the Germans could not. It kept us inside. We certainly will never forget this years Liberation Day, and I will never again under-estimate how important freedom is and how much I miss it.

Liberation Day

Liberation Day – the 74th anniversary of the day the island was liberated from the occupying German Forces.

We spent a lovely day in town with friends, having lunch and wandering around all the things that were there for kids to do. It was brilliant this year – different organisers meant a fresh pair of eyes and things were more spread out and as a result it felt more laid back.

Despite all the fun we never forget what we commemorate. I think of my family who stayed on the island through out the Occupation and those who were Evacuated. We will never forget.

Day 129

Liberation DayToday is Liberation Day – 73 years since the island was liberated from the occupying Nazi forces and still another bank holiday and a day to enjoy together.

We took the bus into town and had a wander through the activities in town and then went to our friend’s Emma and Matin’s house for a BBQ. Entirely satisfactory day together.

A year in pictures – Day 129

Liberation Day

Today was Liberation Day – 72 years since the island was liberated from the occupying German forces.

We spent the morning in the garden and then went into town in the afternoon to see the cavalcade and the kids played in the Creation Station tent and did colouring and making. It was brilliant.

Had a lovely day with the kids and my sister and it was so lovely that the weather was gorgeous, although the wind was a little chilly.

2016 Project366 (Day 130)

Liberation Day

Today is Liberation Day.

It is a chance for us to remember and give thanks for those people who survived the Occupation of the island by the German forces, those who survived evacuation and living away from loved ones and those who returned after being deported and exiled from their homeland. We think and remember of all those who did not survive. Those who were victims of the war and violence and those who gave their lives fighting for freedom. 71 years ago this little island was liberated. Today we give thanks.

Unfortunately the weather has been horrible today. Wet and miserable and it really did put a dampener on the whole thing! We went into town to see what was going on but we got pretty wet. However, the kids really enjoyed listening to the fantastic Elastic Band in the marquee. The Little Miss particularly loved it and was jigging about and making us smile.

Happy Liberation Day everyone. x

2015 Project365 (Day 130)

Family

Another quick photo from yesterday because today seems to have been ‘just one of those days’. Tired children and parents do not make for a very happy day I am afraid!

So, here’s one of our happy family!

2015 Project365 (Day 129)

Liberation70

May the 9th 2015 – 70 years since the island was liberated from the German occupying forces. Each year that passes there are fewer and fewer people who lived through it and this year was a particularly special occasion.

We had a wonderful day. The Countess of Wessex came over to unveil a memorial stone and she had a bit of a walkabout and thankfully the rain held off and the cavalcade went as planned. There were loads of military vehicles, something which my father-in-law would have really enjoyed. There were also two helicopters that kept flying overhead with a man hanging out and waving!

It was an amazing day and I often thought about what it must have been like to be down at the harbour in 1945 on the day that the British soldiers arrived. The relief must have been phenomenal because people were starving and dying.

I am continually grateful for the freedom that we have and our yearly reminder out our Liberation certainly keeps it at the forefront of our minds. Our beautiful island continues to be a place of peace and happiness and long may it continue.

2014 Project365 (Day 129)

Liberation Day

Happy Liberation Day! It is 69 years today since Guernsey was liberated from the occupying German forces.

We decided to go into town quite early and it meant that we were able to have a good wander around before it got really busy. There was loads to see and fortunately the weather was reasonably kind to us. It was breezy but at least it didn’t rain.

This afternoon we did some gardening before heading out for an early tea. It’s been a lovely day and we are all exhausted!
