Uganda – Day 1

So today my Dad, sister and my sister’s sister-in-law (confused yet?!) head off to Uganda.

We are going to visit the This is Epic the projects in Kyotera.

I have never been to Africa (except Egypt but that doesn’t feel like real Africa!) so I am really excited.

I am hoping to blog about my experiences whilst I am out there.

So today we left Guernsey set at 10.15am, got an airport transfer to Heathrow and and we have to wait until 8pm tonight. We are on a night flight to Dubai and then we have to get another flight to Entebbe

Think we might be pretty tired by this time tomorrow!

A year in pictures – Day 218

Y-front runSuper busy day but we started off with going to watch the Y-front run.

This is a brilliant event run by This is Epic which encourages runners to participate in a 10k run or a shorter fun run – it also then asks people to wear y-fronts whilst they do it. This year participants were encouraged to decorate their pants, and most people wore them on top of their running clothes, although there were a few who just wore pants!

This is my cousin’s wife Vicky, sporting a fantastic pair of pants which were decorated beautifully by her daughter Rosalie. She even included a tail! Great work!

A year in pictures – Day 195

Epic Iron Man

This week my crazy brother-in-law Philip and his friend Warren have been attempting to do 7 iron man triathalons in 7 days.

That means, a 2.5 mile swim in the sea, 112 miles on the bike followed by a full marathon.

Ridiculous!

Warren has had to pull out as he was so exhausted and Philip is just completing day 5.

The Mister went down to run some of the marathon with him and he was joined by my nephew for part of his first lap.

Whilst Philip and I don’t always see eye to eye on things, I am so proud of him for attempting this. He is incredibly fit and has the most astounding mental strength I think I have ever seen. I am still not sure whether he will complete but whether he does or doesn’t he will have taken himself to the limits.

2016 Project366 (Day 308)

This is Epic!I am super proud of my sister and brother-in-law as the charity they started won the Overseas Charity of the Year for at the 2016 Guernsey Community Foundation Awards.

I am super proud of them and This is Epic is changing so many lives and a high profile award such as this really helps to highlight the amazing work that Epic does. Their function is very simple and they use something called Village Savings and Loans. The website is well worth a read if you want to know more information.

2016 Project366 (Day 261)

Epic CakesThis evening I helped my sister out with organising a quiz for their charity This is Epic.

It was a fantastic evening and we raised lots of money and everyone had a good time.

Of course I was in charge of the cake table… always trust a Le Tissier to sort out the pudding table!

2016 Project366 (Day 255)

Epic12

Another insane This is Epic event, this time running a 10k circuit for 12 hours overnight.

As usual the set up was fab but the start and finish at the Vale Castle was just spectacular.

Great venue and great job everyone!

2016 Project366 (Day 251)

7 September 2016

In a couple of weeks my sister is involved with another charity fundraiser for This is Epic.

Thankfully this fundraiser does not involve a single pair of trainers but instead plenty of cake and alcohol at a quiz!

Tonight we had a planning meeting, in a pub, with gin. Perfect.

2016 Project366 (Day 178)

Y-front run

My brother-in-law has been involved in helping to organise a y=front run to raise money for This is Epic and MUG.

We went down to offer our support to all the insane people who went out wearing their saggy underpants and completed the run. The atmosphere was fab and everyone did a great job even if it was pretty warm.

2016 Project366 (Day 172)

Running nuttersI didn’t have time to take a photo today as it is my first day back at work, followed by choir and it was a busy day!

Here is an additional photo from yesterday instead. Here is my sister and her husband just after they had completed a half marathon and she had got her PB.

Yes, her husband is wearing a pair of saggy y-fronts because he was promoting the y-front 10k they are organising for next week. I expect to see many more pairs of these saggy pants out on the streets next week. Lovely.

2015 Project365 (Day 248)

Epic48 - The Finish!

They did it!!!!

The Epic48 team made it to the end of their 48 hours of hell on treadmills and Adam smashed the British record in the process.

It has been the most tremendous effort from the runners. Their determination, grit and sheer bloody-mindedness has carried them through. There were definitely times when I wondered whether they would make it. They also had the most splendid support crew from paramedics to the best masseur and chiropractor team I have ever met!!

I am so proud of them all, but I am especially proud of my brother-in-law Philip and his friend Warren, as well as my lovely sister, Louise. Between them they have managed to put on this event, create a buzz, publicise it, pull in some big names, get sponsorship and pull off this amazing weekend.

The reality is that this event was not about self-promotion or glory. It wasn’t about breaking world records, they were just a bonus. This weekend was about making changes for children who are suffering in some of the most most heart-breaking situations through the NSPCC. It was about providing funding for bereaved children through The Hub’s Sunflower Project in Guernsey. It was about making a difference through Village Saving and Loans schemes which are being rolled out in the Republic of Congo and Uganda through This is Epic.

So, whilst these guys and girl put themselves through hell on treadmills, this weekend was about raising money and raising the profile for these causes so that other people do not have to go through hell.

Please donate generously. Please be compassionate and kind. Please recognise that events like this put things into context. Our lives are so full and so rich and we, as individuals and as groups, can make the most enormous difference in other people’s lives.
