May the 9th 2015 – 70 years since the island was liberated from the German occupying forces. Each year that passes there are fewer and fewer people who lived through it and this year was a particularly special occasion.
We had a wonderful day. The Countess of Wessex came over to unveil a memorial stone and she had a bit of a walkabout and thankfully the rain held off and the cavalcade went as planned. There were loads of military vehicles, something which my father-in-law would have really enjoyed. There were also two helicopters that kept flying overhead with a man hanging out and waving!
It was an amazing day and I often thought about what it must have been like to be down at the harbour in 1945 on the day that the British soldiers arrived. The relief must have been phenomenal because people were starving and dying.
I am continually grateful for the freedom that we have and our yearly reminder out our Liberation certainly keeps it at the forefront of our minds. Our beautiful island continues to be a place of peace and happiness and long may it continue.
