2016 Project366 (Day 133)

Art

A little while ago we unexpectedly had some money given to us and we decided to spend it on a couple of pieces of original art works. We really enjoy buying pictures that mean something to us and bought a couple whilst on honeymoon.

There is a local artist called Wendy Griffin and I have always admired her work when she features it in the local eisteddfod and it was lovely to be able to buy some of her work.

This was my favourite. It is an oil painting and I think the colours are just lovely. I am delighted with it!

2015 Project365 (Day 158)

Arts Sunday

Several times a year the seafront in town is shut and they have community events such as art, music, sport etc.

Today was Arts Sunday and there were lots of fab stalls showing off handcrafts and handmade items and the rather fabulous Guernsey Arts Commission had some make and try stalls. There were also 4 (I think!) stages showing local dance, musicians and bands. This photo shows the Guernsey traditional dancers, or Les Danseurs De L’Assembliaise De Guernesiaise to give them their proper title, doing their stuff!

It was a lovely atmosphere and I do love to see our beautiful town used for community events. Well done to all involved.

2013 Project365 (Day 316)

First pictureI picked The Little Mister up from the nanny today and she presented me with his first piece of artwork.

It is now attached to my freezer by magnets. As it should be.

2013 Project365 (Day 160)

Arts Sunday9 June 2013 – Today was Arts Sunday on Guernsey Seafront and there were loads of different arts activities, including screen printing, dancing, singing and various workshops.

This was a vey cool fridge art project.

Unfortunately the weather wasn’t great, it was overcast with a chilly wind which is such a shame when everyone had worked so hard.

There was also a cruise ship just outside the harbour, I reckon there is a visit from at least one cruise ship a day which is brilliant for our tourism income!

2012 Project365 (Day 158)

St Ives OwlThe Mister and I went on honeymoon to St Ives. We had a blissful week of doing very little except walking, sleeping, eating and visiting tourist attractions and shops.

St Ives is well known for having plenty of art galleries and one of the things we wanted to do is buy a couple of original paintings. We thought it would be a nice use of the money The Mister’s Mum had given us for a wedding present.

This oil painting of an owl was the one that The Mister chose. I have to say over time I have grown to really like it, but it definitely took a while. I love the texture and that it looks as though the bird has been out hunting all night and is having a rest before heading out again. Most of all, it makes me think about the lovely time we had on honeymoon!

2012 Project365 (Day 69)

TilesToday I feel like I have spent most of my day in child protection meetings. They can, without a doubt, be long, tedious and full of circular discussions.

Every time I go to our social services building I am struck by how beautiful these tiles are. They are on the lower part of the wall in the hallway and for ages I have wanted to photograph them. Today, I decided to do just that, and received extremely strange looks from one of the social workers I know when she nearly tripped over me! I had to explain what I was doing, and to be honest she didn’t seem too surprised!

I think they are gorgeous, and suspect that they are probably Victorian. I love the colours and how vibrant they are. At least I have something pretty to look at when I go to meetings!

SoF Artist’s Meet

Had a brilliant weekend in Derby staying with a bunch of random internet strangers we know from the Ship of Fools. Of course the reality is that most of the aren’t actually strangers anymore as we have met several times before!

The excuse reason for a meet this time was to do art. Well, to be perfectly honest, there wasn’t masses and masses of art going on, but The Mister and Anne and a few other people went off and did some painting and bits and pieces and I did some cross-stitch. The kids had a brilliant time though making boats and things out of cardboard boxes and doing colouring and stuff.

It was lovely to chill out this weekend with people I like to be with, to relax, drink wine and talk nonsense. Perfect.

The only less that perfect thing is that I have a cold and feel rotten. Other than that, everything is perfect!

Just one pic… but click through to see the rest on Flickr!

A little culture

Today The Mister and I took a little trip to The British Museum. Apart from a brief visit earlier in the year to see the Hadrian exhibition I have never had the chance to wander around the museum. It’s fascinating, but I have decided that I really do have a fascination with death, dying and the rituals associated with these major events. Anyway, the other thing I realised is that I do have the shortest attention span in the world… after about 15 minutes of seeing one thing or the other I get pretty bored. I still adore the roof though, and The Mister had to stop me taking even more photos of it.

At the British Museum at the moment they have five contemporary sculptures on display including one by Ron Mueck that The Mister wanted to see and an Anthony Gormley that I wanted to see. The Ron Mueck one is pictured here on the right… it was fab but odd. He does very realistic sculptures of people, but they are either enormous, or dinky. This was a huge one and you could see each individual whisker and spots on the face. Very cool.

Anyway, after we had spent a couple of hours at the museum and I had got bored we wandered off to find something to eat before The Mister managed to get a cup of his favourite Tim Horton’s coffee. It’s good to keep him happy!
