2012 Project365 (Day 255)

Guernsey Air ShowToday was the Guernsey Battle of Britain Airshow (although I think they have lost the Battle of Britain title). Last year one of the deals about coming back to Guernsey was that we had to be back in time to watch the Red Arrows. We were definitely back in time, unfortunately the fog didn’t get the memo and most of the airshow was cancelled.

Luckily The Mister is working a night shift tonight and I was able to take a long lunch hour. We sat and ate our sandwiches and watched the planes fly over what truly is the most dramatic backdrop for an airshow. I don’t think you can beat the setting for this airshow.

The Mister took lots of photos, but this was the one that stood out to me. I think it is the Spitfire and the Lancaster flying over the Condor fast ferry with Herm in the background. A wonderful scene of some of the old and the new modes of transport that we see on this little island.

Waddington Airshow 2010

The Mister and I have had a really nice weekend at Waddington Airshow. It is a gonormous airshow with a huge static display and a great flying show. The Mister was pant-wettingly excited to actually get to see the Vulcan fly. Every airshow we have been to he has hoped that this plane would actually make it, and so far it has been absent. This time however, he was fortunate to see it (yeah it was good, but I am still not sure what is actually so great about it to be honest!) One of my favourite bits of the day was seeing a swing and jazz female harmony group called The Manhattan Dolls – they were brilliant!

We also saw the Red Arrows who are always brilliant but they were missing one of the planes this time which made every formation look wonky and just not quite right. Anyway, we had a brilliant time and we stayed on the campsite next to the airshow which means we got to watch a bit more of today’s display whilst we were packing up (in gale force I might mention!) It was a great weekend, although The Mister and I have discovered that we are both grumpy little shites when we are tired and hungry!

Planes, Mister and Minsters

After having had a shitty week last week, I really needed a top weekend to cheer me up… and I got it.

On Saturday The Mister and I went to Waddington Interneational Airshow. It was fab, mainly because the weather was absolutely glorious and I got to see The Red Arrows which was exciting. Having said that, it was pretty knackering and I ended up nearly dropping off to sleep when I was driving later.

After that we drove up to Beverley for my aunt and uncle’s leaving party. My uncle is a vicar at Beverley Minster but he is leaving, with my aunt, to go to Argentina where he has been appointed as a Suffragan Bishop to the indigenous people (i.e. the Indians) in the northern part of the country. So, they had a lovely leaving service in the Minster and then a fabulous leaving party afterwards. They also had a band called Mambo Jambo which was such fun, especially as the acoustics in the Minster are so wonderful.

Anyway, if you think of it, please pray for my aunt and uncle Cath and Nick, and their children who are staying in the UK… in fact the youngest is going to live with my parents. Heh… a teenager in the house again. God works in mysterious ways!!!

Ps) If you are interested Uncle Nick’s blog can be found here.

Pps) Some pics from the weekend…

Shuttleworth

Today The Mister and I donned our anoraks and went to our first airshow of the year at Shuttleworth. It was a lovely day but I am surprisingly knackered.

Shuttleworth is a fab place. They have an exhibition of old planes but they also have a bird of prey sanctuary and we pitched up there just in time for one of their flying shows. It was lovely to see owls being flown right over our heads! We saw lots of very old planes flying, although it was a little bit breezy for the really old ones (the ones that look like they are made out of matchsticks) to fly. Despite a chilly breeze it was a fab day to watch an air display. Shuttleworth has quite a large collection of early aircrafts, most of which fly. There was quite an amusing moment though when we were wandering through one of the hangars. I saw this plane and I was chuntering on about it being a de Havilland Dragon Rapide and how I had been in one of them many years ago when I was about 10 years old, Anyway, I suddenly realised that this wasn’t any old Rapide, but this was the one that I had been in. It’s owned by my Dad’s old boss and I only realised because it has his daughters name on the side.

The other thing I decided at this air show was that I would like to run an alternative commentary for women. Something like…. “Ladies here we have coming into view another plane… yes another one…. it’s red this time. Pretty isn’t it? I think it would match my shoes nicely.” I think it would add something to the experience for all those women who are dragged along there by their husbands/boyfriends/sons etc.

A fab day out…. so here are some pics.

Mozzy bites

dscn6027dscn6031dscn6034This weekend has been really nice and chilled. Having spent the last couple of weekends driving Oop North it was lovely not have to drive anywhere this weekend. So, yesterday we took a very short drive to go to a shopping centre so I could try and find something to wear for a wedding next weekend. I lost the will to live within about 30 minutes – I truly, truly hate shopping these days.

Giving the shopping up as a bad idea we went instead to look at planes at The de Havilland Aircraft Heritage Centre, better known as The Mosquito Museum. It was where the original Mosquito plane was built and they have the prototype in one of their hangars. What I love about this museum (and yes, very sadly, I have actually been there before – even before The Mister came on the scene, so I can’t even blame him for my fascination in aeroplanes!) is that it really is an anoraks dream. They do have a display about the planes and lots of information but the hangars have several strange people wandering around and working on the aircrafts. It’s a plane anoraks idea of heaven. Therefore, The Mister was happy!

I should also say, that after we had been to the museum we popped along to the RSPCA rescue centre which is pretty much next door to look at the cats and the dogs. There was so many gorgeous cats there that I would have loved to take home with me. The Mister has promised me that if we ever move in together then I can have as many cats as I like. I think three is the ideal number!
