2012 Project365 (Day 203)

The Little GardenerIt has been a glorious day in beautiful Guernsey and we enjoyed a nice barbecue at lunchtime.

After lunch Barnabas helped Grandpa with watering his garden. I think he may have greener fingers than his mother at this rate!

2012 Project365 (Day 202)

Guernsey National Hill ClimbI’ve had a lovely day. The sun has been shining and we haven’t had loads of stuff to do for a change. Whilst the house is taking ages to go through at least that means that we don’t feel guilty about spending time relaxing!

This afternoon The Mister and I went to the National Hill Climb. It has been years since I went to a Hill Climb and it was a really good one. The weather was perfect and the cars, motorbikes and go-carts were really competitive. The basic premise of the competition is that the driver races from the bottom of the hill, to the top of the hill. The faster drivers were getting there in 27-30 seconds. We had a few exciting crashes and no-one was injured. A lovely afternoon out, especially when various other family members joined us.

2012 Project365 (Day 201)

Glorious GardenDad has been working hard to get his garden ready for North Show judging. The garden is looking absolutely lovely and even the sun came out to help things along.

The judges came around today so we will have to wait and see the outcome. Eden appreciated the beautiful flowers though.

2012 Project365 (Day 200)

Picture 026My 200th post!!

This is a photograph of Gran Nora and my Uncle Stephen on the day he graduated with an Open University qualification in Social Work. Really, this post should have been yesterday but a) I forgot, and b) I wanted my 200th post to be special.

Uncle Steve died in 2000 from cancer. He is very sorely missed by his wife and children but also his extended family. He was a brilliant guy who headed up the Children’s Services in Guernsey for a while and was well-liked in work. At home he was a little bit bonkers and was known for his sheds – he seemed to have several. On one particular day he ordered a delivery of concrete so that he could concrete his new shed. Sadly he had miscalculated and when the lorry started pouring this concrete into the base of the shed he realised that he had somewhat overestimated. I remember him shovelling half-set concrete out onto the gravel driveway. It looks like an elephant had left giant turds all up the driveway!

I also remember him setting up a long bit of plastic at the top of the slope in his garden and then covering it with washing up liquid and putting the hose running at the top. We then spent a happy afternoon sliding down the slope. It would have been a nice clean event had he not recently mowed the lawn so when you rolled off the polythene at the end you also got covered in grass clippings. Those are the things I remember best.

Yesterday was the 12th anniversary of his death. We still miss him and I often wonder how much richer our lives would be were he still with us.

2012 Project365 (Day 199)

Sweet PeasDad’s garden is starting to look absolutely lovely. The vegetables are growing fast and the flowers are blooming.

One of my favourite flowers are Sweet Peas and there are loads of them growing up the fruit cage. To keep them flowering you have to keep picking them. So, almost every room in the house smells absolutely glorious with the sweet fragrance of Sweet Peas.

Sadly they die quite quickly once picked so we have to go and pick more!

2012 Project365 (Day 198)

17 July 2012I know this is cheating again but this photo wasn’t taken today. This was taken at Sam and Sally’s wedding a couple of weeks ago and it is a picture of my Mum and her three sisters and one brother. The only person who is missing from this is my lovely Uncle Steve who died 10 years ago or so now.

I love this photo and it amuses me how much my Mum and my aunts are looking alike these days – they seem to be morphing into the same person. We are lucky to have such a close family though. Through the good times and the bad I know that they will always be there. Usually eating cake.

2012 Project365 (Day 197)

The Pudding ScavengerTonight we had a family barbecue, even though it was raining. As always with one of our family do’s there was a lot of desserts…. it seems to me that it is a matter of family pride.

Eden, it would seem, is also a pudding lover and she is a little bit of a scavenger and she would go from person to person trying to eat bits of whatever they had in their bowl! Here she is with her favourite Uncle sharing his ice-cream.

2012 Project365 (Day 196)

The Olympic Flame RelayToday The Mister and I went down to St Peter Port to see the Olympic Flame Relay. I kind of wanted to see it but at the same time I was aware that friends had been to see the relay and said that it was a bit of a disappointment. Admittedly a friend described the torch as “a giant flaming cheesegrater” which was pretty accurate.

I have to admit that seeing the relay in Guernsey was pretty good as it was done over quite a short distance, and therefore we saw maybe 4 or 5 different people carrying the torch. It also went on a boat across the harbour before lighting the Olympic cauldron.

What I hadn’t anticipated was finding the whole thing quite moving, and it wasn’t just because I was feeling hormonal! One of the people carrying the torch was a guy called Manny Helmot. Manny was a Commonwealth Games cyclist who was hit by a car in 1998 and suffered horrendous injuries to his arm, sight and brain. Manny was awarded £14 million in compensation for his injuries. What really made me feel emotional today was the news reporter interviewed his mother and she said that the whole family were just so proud that Manny could once again represent his island. It was really moving and such a pleasure to see him carrying the Olympic flame with such pride.

So, what I thought would be a rather over-commercialised and over-hyped event turned out to be really moving.

2012 Project365 (Day 195)

Sunshine ScrabbleHurray! For the first time in weeks we have had a day without any rain. It has generally been quite a productive day -I even bought my first baby clothes, but admittedly they were brand new and from a car boot sale but they were a bargain!

In the afternoon Mum and Auntie Cath and I managed to sit in the garden and play Scrabble. Perfect!

2012 Project365 (Day 194)

Creative playI love this photo because it shows Eden engaging in some lovely creative play. For Christmas last year my Mum bought Barnabas this amazing Playmobil Farm. He loves it and I so does Eden ad I love watching them play with it. I reckon it took Dad about 3 hours to put all the pieces together!

Today I was watching Eden fish through all the teeny tiny little pieces. She made me laugh because she would find a hat and then she would put it on her head, she would find a tiny glass and drink out of it, a farm hay fork and pretend to eat off it. It is brilliant to see a small child learning through play.
